aprilvalentine: (Finch thinking of Reese)

The main thing I want to do with this post is to spread the word about a great new comm for Reese/Finch fans: Rinchy Safenest
The mod is [profile] tiranog and she's a fannish veteran, like me, who's fallen hard for POI and Reese and Finch. The comm looks beautiful and I'm hoping lots of fans will join and start to participate!

Also, there's a new comm for POI on DW: Point Of Interest Chat.
This one is moderated by [personal profile] orockthro and [profile] sarcastarista. It's already shaping up to be really fun!

I've had quite a day off, resting up from the rush of back to school shoppers at WalMart where I work. I spent time playing with my iPad and the new apps I downloaded in the last couple of days. Here's a piece of art I made:

And I absolutely love this one!

I'll refrain from posting the weird one of Reese where I made him into a vampire, lol.

They are great time sinks, these apps. I even broke down and spent $9.99 on the app for Photoshop, figuring I can actually do some decent cropping and adjustments on pics before I plug them into the easy apps. I've gathered a bunch of the pics I have downloaded onto my laptop to put them on my iPad so every pic I make won't use the same old images too.

Today was interesting in the news too. It was the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington and Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech. So much has happened, so much has improved and yet we still have so far to go. I teared up watching the news coverage, the one man still alive who was there speaking that day, the little great grand daughter of Rev. King helping to ring the bell, the older white couple who marched back then, met and married, the little girl of ten who said she hopes to be able to be at the hundredth anniversary when she's sixty years old and President Obama's speech.

In my home town however, a valiant police officer was killed early this morning. He was serving a warrant on a teen who'd shot someone and even though he was wearing the lastest and best body armor, the bullets got through and despite the best efforts of Shock Trauma, he did not survive. These things always upset me.

But in the good news/surprising news area, WalMart, where I've worked the last four years, announced today that they will extend health coverage to domestic partners, yes, same sex partners of employees. The next time someone comes through my check out line and tries to talk trash about the store (yes, this happens. For some reason, certain customers have to say things about the supposed terrible company to which I always reply, "well, you're shopping here.") I'll point out that they are ahead of many other companies in that respect! (One man, noticing we didn't have many cashiers working one day said derisively to me, "I see Mr. Walton doesn't believe in scheduling enough workers and makes those of you who are here just work harder." I replied, "Mr. Walton died several year ago, sir, and he never made up the schedules anyway." It's as if they expect me to say, yes, WalMart is the horror of the modern world, shouldn't exist because it's bad, bad, bad and has put small mom and pop stores out of business. One young woman even snarked that her mother was suing WalMart. Didn't stop her from making a purchase though, I noticed. Hello, it's not perfect but it gave me a job when I couldn't find one in my field or at any mom and pop store in town. Why shop someplace if you think it's that bad, right?)

I tried to post about these things on FB but was unable to upload a picture to go along with any of them when using Firefox. My version is out dated so I tried Safari too but it was exceedingly slow and I gave up after five minutes had passed an the tiny pic of the murdered cop wasn't loaded. Sigh. What good is FB if you can't use it the way it's supposed to be used?

Besides spending time making pics today and posting them on Tumblr, I also broke down and got a paid account on DreamWidth! I just can't stand not having enough icons for posting and since I'm spending more time there now, partly due to the POI Chat comm, I needed to do that.

Anyway, do the fannish thing and go join at least one of the comms I mentioned above.
