aprilvalentine: (Finch worried Reese)
Whew... this is getting tricky. Today, I filled a prompt that's been on my mind for some time from the meme_of_interest:

aprilvalentine: (Reese and Finch on bench)
This is the next story in my Ten in Ten series, a direct sequel to "Head Games"

aprilvalentine: (Reese and Finch walking)
Okay, I am officially crazy. I'm going to try the ten in ten challenge Astolat put out there. I have several WIPs that I've been playing with so this first entry didn't take long to get together. It's "finished" in that it's the end of the first chapter of a longer work. I'll post the next scene/chapter tomorrow.

This is part two of my series, "Dark City" which follows on after the fic set back when Reese was working with Kara Stanton, but you don't need to read that one first. It's non-con (or dub-con depending on how you look at it) so if that's not to your liking, feel free to skip it. It doesn't affect what happens in this story. This one is set shortly after the pilot, while Reese is still trying to find things out about Finch, but he involves himself in another situation as well.

On this date, 47 years ago, Star Trek the classic series premiered. I didn't get into Star Trek fandom until 1976, or even start watching the show until it went into syndication while I was in college, but the show changed my life and the lives of many of the people who are closest to me.

Fandom existed before Star Trek, but it was Star Trek that started fandom on the path that made it into what we understand it to be today. Fans wrote meta essays in those days, drew simple line art and published them with letters of comment in fanzines, but it was Trek fans who began publishing fanfiction so profusely that fanfic took over zines and became one of the main areas of fannish expression. We wanted more of the show we loved and so, in the absence of new episodes, we created more ourselves, taking the Enterprise crew to places our television sets, even with the imagination of Gene Roddenberry, couldn't or wouldn't take us. Into situations that they might not recover from by next week's show, into their bedrooms and of course, not just into the bedrooms occupied by the opposite sex.

I heard about slash on one of the first visits I paid to my fannish mentor, Bev Volker, who became my best friend and along with her sister, Nancy Kippax a collaborator in writing and exploring the then uncharted waters of fan publication, putting on conventions and all things fannish. Bev showed me a "drawer fic" as we called them in those days -- an unpublished story written by "the Austrailian fan" that had been sent through the mail from fan to fan but was hidden and secret. I remember exactly where I sat in Bev's basement office as I read it... no names were given in the fic, but it was clear who was Spock and who was Kirk. It involved a lot of touching, a sensual backrub with oiled fingers that brought completion. Bev and Nancy's zine, Contact, celebrated the friendship between Kirk and Spock and it took off like gangbusters, tapping into the one theme that so many Trek fans found the most interesting, or should I say, fascinating aspect of the show. The all slash zines came later but the pioneering influence of "Contact" cannot be denied. I did not write K/S, preferring back then to write about the deep emotional bond between Kirk and Spock. It was only later when I got into Starsky & Hutch that I became a slasher. Still, even now, when I look at the relationship between Reese and Finch in Person of Interest, I can not only enjoy the slashability of them, I can enjoy, read and write them as pair bond who don't necessarily have to have a sexual component to their relationship. And their love, their slash relationship, is predicated on their deep emotional bond. That's still what turns me on, what attracts me to a fandom and at this point, I'm pretty sure it always will.

ETA: Bev and Nancy, God rest their souls, used to sign their editorials in "Contact" and their fannish letters in a way that signified that they understood how others felt about the Kirk/Spock relationship and I think that applies today when we meet others who are like-minded in fandom and make online friends with those who love the relationships we also love. "We are one; we reach."

So Happy Star Trek Anniversary and may fandom always be my way of life! FIAWOL, everybody! Star Trek Lives!

Today's entry is in honor of Michael Emerson, a fine actor I've come to love in the past year. I was slightly familiar with him before discovering Person of Interest, but hadn't really gotten to know him. He's very talented, very cute and a wonderful person as well, I admire his talent and his dedication to causes for the LGTB community and the world of theatre. His portrayal of Mr. Finch on POI has sparked my imagination and is endlessly fascinating. I found this pic online, originating, I believe on his fan website.

Yesterday was Friday. I worked and got off at 2 p.m., picked up a few things from the store and came out to wait for the bus. I was hoping it would show up at 2:30 but it didn't. Nor did it come at 3 or 3:15. At that point, I got up and walked all the way down to the big intersection of Taylor Ave. and Loch Raven Blvd. I'd been hungry for pizza and decided to get one from the new place I'd tried last week. I ordered a personal pizza with bacon and mushrooms, an order of fried zucchini and a slice of lemon meringue pie and by that time, I didn't feel like waiting for another bus so I just called a cab and went home.

I ate, took a short nap and then went online to the Rinch chat on the POI Discussion board. I was tired and left around 11:30 and went to bed fairly early.

And totally forgot to post for the day! That's another ADHD thing, completely forgetting something I'd planned to do, something I am actually trying to make a habit of doing. I didn't remember until I got up today but have been trying to get a few things done around the house, not entiredly successfully, but I'm trying.

So, not much to say but just wanted to put this entry in so I'll have a full thirty posts for thirty days, even if this one wasn't on time. It's the weekend though and I am glad about that!

I just had to have my season two set on the day it came out. I started seeing Tumblr posts about the gag reel in the morning and didn't want to have to see it online, but from my very own set. I headed to work a bit early to be able to pick up my set. That's what I did last year too. I would have ordered from Amazon, but figured that I could use my employee discount to save 10% on the boxed set. However, much to my dismay, we didn't get the Blu-ray set, only the regular dvds! That would have been fine last year since I didn't have a blu-ray player then. Ian and Stacey got me one for Christmas last year so I planned on getting the season two set since, for not much more money, you also get the dvds and uv set.

I dithered a bit, nearly buying the plain dvds, then walked all the way around to Target before work started. I only had fifteen minues by then and had to rush. But Target didn't have season two at all! Rushing back, I phoned Ian who understood the problem immediately and he said he'd come by the store to pick up my credit card and go get the set for me at Best Buy while I was at work. So, when he picked me up at ten, he had it for me!

I love having it. The show is sharp and clear and beautiful. The first thing I watched was the gag reel and it's a bit longer than last year's with a number of funny clips. TPH and JC on the bridge filming their scene after Reese gets out of Rikers in Prisoner's Dilemma. TPH says, "Jesus, can you make the wind stop blowing?" KC and JC "exercising" between shots -- actually Jim is doing push ups and Chappy is hunched over his back as if seated on him, also going up and down in time to Jim's push ups. (Chappy's butt looks pretty big in this shot, lol.) And my favorite was ME cursing out a driver who honked in the middle of the rainy scene with Reese, Finch and Bear coming out of the movies. Whatever he said is bleeped, but he goes on to also yell, "Thank you, very much." There are even a couple bloopers with Bear!

I also watched the commentary on "God Mode." My plan for today was to re-watch it and take notes but I didn't get around to it. They talk a lot of course about things we don't find quite as important, like which staff members are doing "cameos" in the episode. I'd prefer, of course, for them to speak directly about the characters' motivations and relationships, but they did say a few things that were interesting in that regard. They mentioned Reese's reaction to Finch having created the virus, how it would have been "easy" to have them on the outs for season 3 but they felt it was more in character and less cliched to do it the way they did -- thank goodness -- and I agree. They mention several times that they had other scenes or dialogue in certain scenes that would have fleshed things out more and I only wish we could have seen them or read them somewhere. But the one that really surprised me the most was when we see Finch injured after the ferry boat explosion: "This explains how Finch got his injuries -- or some of his injures." Yes, from

I went to our Maryland State Fair on Saturday with my good friend, [profile] tiranog and of course we spent a lot of time talking about Reese and Finch attending such a fair, what would bring them there, what they'd be wearing and how they'd react to the rides, the food and everything. This fic is the result.

aprilvalentine: (Reese and Finch after ecstasy)
Well, I got home from work, totally wasted as usual. I can barely move when I get out of there lately and it really gets to me, even only doing four hours. And I was so tired I just vegged out on the couch and finally realized it was already after midnight. I then spent awhile trying to upload some pics to photobucket, which took time since my Firefox and it don't get along. Finally switched to using Safari and that went better. So here, instead of an actual word post, is a nice little pic I made, Reese symbolically protecting Finch.

On the POI Discussion Forum, there has been a lot of discussion about how the "Core Four" are the center of the show and how the addition of new characters could lessen the importance of the original cast members, mainly Carter and Fusco. I have always felt that the term "core four" is a fanon title, never used by the show runners. Never have all four characters appeared in a scene together or worked a case totally together except for "Til Death" this season and they weren't all in the same room at once in that one either. [profile] mamahub posted that she feels the show really has a "core duo" in Reese and Finch and that the rest of the show revolves around them. I agreed. Several posts ensued saying that other actors could come in, play other characters and the premise of the show would survive. I felt this was a fallacious argument to try to prove there isn't a core four. Why say the two leads aren't necessary to refute that claim? Why not say, "no the other two are equally important?" Anyway, after a post or two, I was asked the following:

* What makes Reese and Finch core?
* Are they core simply because they are Reese and Finch or are they core because they occupy positions that are essential to the premise of the show according to the introduction?
* What is essential to the mission now? The person of Reese and Finch or the positions they hold?

Here's what I answerd. I thought it would make a good post about how I feel about the show and the characters.

I posted this yesterday on my lj, forgetting that I'd need to post it manually here since it didn't originate on DW.

I'd always wanted to see some of Michael Emerson's artwork and someone posted some the other day on Tumblr. He was an illustrator before going back into the acting profession and I wondered what his style was. Seems it was black and white and... eery!

The main thing I want to do with this post is to spread the word about a great new comm for Reese/Finch fans: Rinchy Safenest
The mod is [profile] tiranog and she's a fannish veteran, like me, who's fallen hard for POI and Reese and Finch. The comm looks beautiful and I'm hoping lots of fans will join and start to participate!

Also, there's a new comm for POI on DW: Point Of Interest Chat.
This one is moderated by [personal profile] orockthro and [profile] sarcastarista. It's already shaping up to be really fun!

I have been planning on starting my own 30 Days of Blogging to keep the interest going for fans on this platform for awhile and as usual, just don't work as efficiently as I used to. But here I am at last, with a post saying I'm going to post every day for the next 30.

I'll be posting about POI, about writing, about playing with Photoshop and other fun free photo apps, and about other fan activities. I'll try to have really substantive content.

I just posted a new POI fic on AO3. It's an episode tag for "All In" where Reese decides to say something more to Finch about Grace. It's slash, of course.

I really should post over here more often. A lot has happened since my last visit. I wasn't even into Person of Interest yet and today that's my main fandom.

I'm enoying the show so much and it's kickstarted my writing muse again after a long dry spell. I joined Tumblr due to POI though right now I'm not doing much there because I've decided to try to avoid spoilers until the end of the season and it'd pretty difficult to do that on Tumblr.

I've written 13 pieces of fic for POI since discovering it last summer and I have several in the works now. Others may be more prolific but for me, that's a lot.

I know there are some comms for POI over here on Dreamwidth so I think I'll be hanging out here a bit more in the near future.

I still can't post. When I tried reading on LJ last night, I couldn't view comments on some posts. Today, I could see and read a bit more, and managed to leave a comment on a friend's post. When I tried to upload a new user pic, the system gave me an error I've never seen before. And when I tried to post, I kept getting a blank screen in my browser with "done" at the bottom where it should show the progress to the next page's url. Argh. And usually, I keep myself logged in, but today I have to keep re-logging in.

Maybe it'll be better when I get home from work. I'm not sure why others are able to post as usual but I still can't, but it's frustrating.
aprilvalentine: (H50 Steve worried eyes)
I really should be posting more here, especially since this is the second day in a row that I've had trouble getting LJ to load. More and more issues are happening with that site, obviously.

Finally we are having some nice weather here in Balitmore. It's been horrible lately, as we've been locked in the north east's heat wave. High humidity has made it absolutely deadly to go outside, and even inside it's awful. Many air conditioners don't have the capacity to help the situation. Monday it stormed and finally broke the heat wave, at least temporarily. Today is really nice and I plan on venturing out since I have the day off.

It's difficult going places and doing things for me due to my old car not having air conditioning. It has it, actually, it just doesn't work. And since it's so old it doesn't seem worth it to pay to fix it, but this summer is so much hotter. I actually drive around with ice packs and have purchased a fan that plugs into the cigarette lighter outlet so that I don't have a heat stroke out there.

Let's hope that even though it's being predicted that it's going to get hot again this weekend, it won't be quite as bad as it's been lately.
aprilvalentine: (J/B WTF?)
Well, I strangely decided to look at an LJ I started awhile ago and haven't been posting to, the one I opened for my crafts posts: April's Kisses. I couldn't even find it at first, since I never added it to my links on my main page, so I had to scroll back through previous entries to find it. I found it and decided to try to post, which meant I had to log out from my main account on LJ. I didn't remember the password for April's Kisses... though I usually use the same one for most accounts, to help remember them. Anyway, I tried it and it didn't work. So I clicked on the "forgot password" link and did what it said, then checked my email looking for a post from LJ letting me know I could re-set the password. Well, much to my surprise, there was no email from LJ... not for resetting that password. But there were a ton of notifications that had gone missing for the last week or so, replies to comments and so-and-so uploaded a new userpic, etc. So I spent a few minutes reading through those, still not receiving a new password email from LJ. So I decided to go back to my my main account, April Valentine, to respond to some of the comments that had been responded to... and couldn't log back in. My password was apparently "incorrect." So, I once again clicked on the "forgot password" link and re-checked my email account. Lo and behold, there was a response from LJ this time. So I dutifutlly clicked on the link and "changed" my password and clicked "proceed." Argh! Now I get a notice that, due to log in failures, my IP is temporarily banned from logging in to LJ. WTF???

So that has brought me back here to rant about it. Of course, resetting my password here was a breeze, obviously. I should really be posting more here anyway, I suppose, though I don't post often enough these days anyway. Sigh. What's a fan to do??
aprilvalentine: (Default)
Well, thanks to a friend, [personal profile] rosalita I've created this account. I'll be looking around for awhile and then I suppose posting more as time goes on and as I figure out how to bring in posts from LJ which I've heard is possible. Not sure what is going on around here yet, but it's either this or start twittering.

Today my puppy, Sasha, chewed up my glasses. They don't fit as well as they did, the frames are scratchy behind my ears and the lenses are messed up by little tooth marks too. I fell asleep on the couch and she got to them. I can see out of them in the middle of the lenses, at least. My son's wedding is in 3 weeks and things are getting tense. And I'm behind in getting my zine up and posted to its LJ location. Typical.

I've decided to work harder on not being depressed or stressed and to be more positive about my life. Now if I can just remember to do it....
